Raksha Bandhan Date Chaos: Why You MUST Know Which Day to Tie Rakhi!

The upcoming sacred festival of Raksha Bandhan date is causing some uncertainty this year. According to the Hindu calendar, Raksha Bandhan is traditionally celebrated on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Shravan month. However, in 2023, there is confusion about whether to observe Raksha Bandhan on August 30th or 31st.

On Raksha Bandhan, sisters traditionally tie a protective thread, known as Rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists. This year, sisters are facing a dilemma about when to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, whether it should be on August 30th or 31st. The reason for this confusion is that on August 30th, the Bhadra period coincides with the full moon (Purnima) date of the Shravan month. This situation extends the Rakhi festival to two days, August 30th and 31st. According to religious beliefs, it is considered inauspicious to perform positive activities during the Bhadra period.

As a result, people are unsure about the auspicious date for celebrating Raksha Bandhan, whether it should be on August 30th or 31st. According to Hindu traditions, it is considered most auspicious to celebrate Raksha Bandhan during the Shravan Purnima date, outside the Bhadra period, preferably during the afternoon.

On Raksha Bandhan, the shadow of Bhadra will be present throughout the day. According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), the start of the Shravan Shukla Purnima date will be at 10:59 AM on August 30th and will continue until 07:05 AM on the next day, August 31st. Along with the beginning of the full moon date on August 30th, the Bhadra period will also commence, lasting until 9:01 PM on the same day. Due to the presence of Bhadra during this time, it is not considered suitable to tie Rakhi on August 30th. Rakhi can only be tied after the conclusion of the Bhadra period. Some astrology experts do not consider tying Rakhi during the night to be auspicious.
